The Long History of Maserati Models

Maserati models hold one of the most distinguished names in the automotive world, and that’s due in large part to their distinguished history. Nearly a hundred years old, the Maserati company has signified speed and expert engineering since its beginning. From a small Italian mechanics’ shop to one of the largest luxury car manufacturers in the world, Maserati cars have progressed significantly due to their design, performance, and expert craftsmanship.

Though the company began in 1914, the first Maserati models didn’t appear until over a decade later. The two brothers for which the cars are named began as mechanics, modifying cars to ready them for racing. In 1926, however, they decided to build their own from scratch, and they did, and shortly thereafter it won a race. By 1929 they had developed another car, the V4, which contended in the Italian Grand Prix and set a speed record for the 10km race in its class. The brothers continued building racing cars and establishing their name; even after selling the company’s stock to another Italian family they continued working and developing vehicles.

By 1962, some of the biggest names in racing had won tournaments using Maserati vehicles, and the company decided to develop Maserati models for the general populace. That year they produced the Sebring, and a year later began selling their famous four-door Quattroporte. As any student of cars knows, that sedan still exists today, available to anyone who can afford it—and who can handle its top speeds of over 160mph. In 1993, Fiat purchased Maserati and the company merged with Ferrari. True to their history, Maserati vehicles continue to compete and score victories in racing championships all over the world.
